Second Thoughts on Narcan

Second Thoughts on Narcan

My first thoughts on the administration of life saving Narcan are that policemen, paramedics and supportive parents and/or friends should all have the ability to possess and to use Narcan in order to save the life of a person who has overdosed on heroin. My second thoughts are that we all need to have some basic knowledge and training on the symptoms of a heroin overdose. Parents and friends probably know what drugs the person was using. Paramedics would be aware of the symptoms of a heroin overdose. Police may or may not have training on the symptoms of a heroin overdose. if the patient is found with drug paraphernalia than heroin can probably be identified. But what if the drugs are not in evidence? What if the patient has some underlying medical condition that is not know? The administration of Narcan for a heroin overdose may not be the answer because it may not be a heroin overdose. Training is needed so that a heroin overdose can be easier to identify. And if the person recovers from the overdose then legally they should be made to enter a rehab program. Frequently when they come back they are combative and not appreciative that they are being given a second chance in life.
